How Many Volts in a Marine Battery?
A boat can fire up at home, then give one weak click at the ramp. The cabin lights may still work. That catches plenty of owners out because a battery can handle small loads while falling short when the starter asks for real current.

Start With the Battery Label
Most labels show voltage, chemistry, group size and intended use. Some also list cold cranking amps, marine cranking amps or amp hour capacity.
A starting battery delivers a hard burst for the engine. A deep cycle model runs trolling motors, pumps and electronics for longer periods. A dual purpose battery covers a bit of both. A quick cranking check may suit the first type, but it says little about the remaining capacity of a deep cycle battery.

Inspect More Than the Terminals
A swollen case, a crack, leaking fluid or unusual heat means testing should stop. A strong rotten egg smell around a lead acid battery is another warning. Gloves and eye protection are sensible. Rings, watches and loose tools should stay away from exposed posts.
Green corrosion, a loose clamp, a frayed cable or a tired ground can make a healthy battery look bad. Slow cranking is sometimes a connection problem.

Give It a Fair Charge First
A half charged battery is easy to misjudge. It may fail under load simply because the charger never restored it fully.

Watch the Voltage Under Load
A load test shows whether the battery can hold voltage while doing work. For a starting battery, an electronic tester can compare measured cranking ability with the rating printed on the case.
Older adjustable testers may apply a controlled load based on that rating. Their instructions need to be followed closely. Guessing at the load or bridging terminals with a metal tool is dangerous.
Voltage watched during engine cranking can also expose a sudden collapse. Even then, the battery should not take the blame too quickly. A dragging starter, damaged cable or poor connection can produce the same ugly reading.
Deep Cycle Testing Takes Longer
A short cranking test says little about how long a deep cycle battery can keep equipment running. Capacity is better checked through a controlled discharge using a known load.
The test records operating time until the battery reaches the maker’s cutoff voltage. It should not be improvised on lithium batteries or unfamiliar battery banks. A battery shop can handle a proper capacity test when the correct equipment is unavailable.
Use a Hydrometer on Flooded Cells
A hydrometer measures the specific gravity of electrolyte in serviceable flooded cells. Readings are taken after a full charge, then compared from one cell to the next.
A single cell sitting noticeably lower than the rest may point to an internal fault. Temperature correction may be needed. AGM, gel and lithium batteries should never be opened for this test.
Check What the Boat Is Doing
A new battery will not stay healthy if the real fault sits elsewhere. Charging voltage should be checked while the engine or approved charger is operating. The correct range depends on the alternator, charger and battery chemistry.
A parasitic draw can also flatten a sound battery while the boat is parked. Bilge pumps, stereos, damaged wiring and forgotten accessories are familiar suspects. Repeated discharge after a successful battery test calls for a proper electrical check.
